The world has gone digital and we turn to the internet for every single thing.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation. It is all about optimizing your website by design and development that will, in turn, help you rank high in search results. Are SEO and SEM different?

SEO is a subset of search engine marketing. SEO is also cited as SEO copywriting, because most of the methods that are used to promote sites in search engines, deal with text.

Search engines such as Google and Bing frequently update their relevancy algorithm up to dozens of times a month. When you see variations in your rankings, it is due to an algorithmic shift or something else outside of your control. Although the basic operation of all search engines is identical, the minor differences between their algorithms drive major changes in results.

What is SEO Copywriting?

SEO Copywriting is the method of writing viewable text on a web page that reads naturally for the user and also targets specific search terms. The reason to do SEO copywriting is to help websites rank highly in the search engines for these same specific search terms.

Along with viewable text, SEO copywriting usually optimizes other on-page elements for the targeted search terms. These combine the Title, Description, Keywords tags, headings, and alternative text. The concept behind SEO copywriting is that search engines want original content pages and not added pages often called “doorway pages” that are created for the sole purpose of achieving high rankings.

What is Search Engine Rank?

When you search any keyword using a search engine, it displays thousands of results available in its database. A page ranking is estimated by the position of web pages arranged in the search engine results. If a search engine is placing your web page in the first position, then your webpage rank will be number 1 and it will be regarded as the page with the highest rank.

What is On-Page and Off-page SEO?

There are two methods of optimization.

  • On-Page SEO – It comprises providing quality content, strategic keyword selection, putting keywords naturally in the content, placing suitable titles on each page, etc.

Off-Page SEO – It involves link building, bought traffic, social media traffic etc.

When you begin the process of establishing a business, the first thing you will do is create a website. Your website will need a  domain name. SEO begins right here.

Before you pick a domain name, you need to analyse the following:

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What do you plan to sell to them? A product or a service?
  • What will make your business plan unique or different from everything else that is already available on the market?

Many people believe it is important to have keywords in a domain. Keywords in the domain name are important, and it provides you with an edge your competition may not have. Irrespective of the name, please ensure that your domain name is small, sticky and free of hyphens.

Why use Keywords in your domain name?

Using keywords in your domain name provides you with a strong competitive advantage over your rivals. It will enhance click-through rates on search engine listings and paid advertisements as well as make it simpler to use your keywords in getting keyword rich detailed inbound links.

  • Who is your target audience?
  • What do you plan to sell to them? A product or a service?

Many people believe it is important to have keywords in a domain. Keywords in the domain name are important, and it provides you with an edge your competition may not have. Irrespective of the name, please ensure that your domain name is small, sticky and free of hyphens.

Many people divide the words in their domain names using either dashes or hyphens. In the past, the domain name itself was an important ranking factor but now research shows it is not as significant a factor anymore.

Put two to three words in your domain name that will be easy to memorize. Some of the most famous websites do a great job of branding by creating their personal word. Few examples are eBay, Yahoo!, Expedia, Slashdot, Fark, Wikipedia, Google, etc.

You should be able to speak it over the telephone once, and the other person should know how to spell it, and they should be capable of guessing what you sell.

Just for Fun – Tell me your website name and let me try to guess 😉

On a serious note, you should be ready to answer the following questions:

  • Why do you need to build your website?
  • Why should people purchase off your site and not from other sites?
  • What makes you different from others?
  • Who are your target audience and what do you plan to sell?

Prepare a list of 5 to 10 websites that you think are amazing. Now think why they are amazing.

Create 5 distinct domain names. Make at least 1 of them odd. Tell them to half a dozen people and notice which ones are the most memorable. You will get more precise feedback if the people do not know you well.

Get your domain name that is catchy, memorable, and relevant to your business.

File Names – The Underdog

One of the easiest methods to enhance your search engine optimization is to look at the way you name your files. Before writing this tutorial, I did a lot of research on file-names and noticed that search engines like Google give too much weight to this element. You should examine what you want to be put on your web page and then give a suitable file name to this page.

Just try giving any keyword in Google search engine and you will see file names highlighted with the keyword you have given. It’s proof that your file name should have appropriate keywords.

File Naming Style – Do’s & Dont’s

  • The filename should rather be short and descriptive.
  • It is better to use same keywords in a filename as well as in page title.
  • Do not use filenames such as service.htm or job.htm as they are general. Use actual service name in your file name such as computer-repairing.htm.
  • Do not assign more than 3-4 words in file names.
  • Separate the keywords by hyphens rather than underscores.
  • Try to assign 2 keywords if possible.

Listed beneath are some filenames which would be perfect from the users’ point of view as well as SEO.

slazenger-brand-balls.html

wimbledon-brand-balls.html

wilson-brand-balls.html

Notice that the keywords are separated by hyphens rather than underscores? Google recognizes good filenames as follows:

SEO-relevant-filename as seo relevant filename(good)

Filenames with underscores are not a safe option.

seo_relevant_filename as seorelevantfilename (not good)

File Extension

You should see that .html, .htm, .php and any other extension do NOTHING for your visitors. It is only a means of offloading some of the tasks of configuring your web server suitably onto your visitor’s. In effect, you are suggesting your site visitors to tell your web server HOW to produce the page, not which one?

Many Webmasters think that it is a useful idea to use filename without using an extension. It may benefit you, but not a whole lot.

URL Sub-Directory Name

From the Search Engine Optimisation point of view, URL sub-directory name rarely matters. You can try giving any keyword in a search, and you will not obtain any sub-directory name matching with your keywords. But from the user’s point of view, you should have an abbreviated sub-directory name.

Important Highlights

Keep the following details in mind before naming your files:

  • Keep the web page filename crisp, simple, descriptive, and appropriate to the page content.
  • Try to apply a maximum of 3-4 keywords in your filename, and these keywords should appear in your web page title as well.
  • Separate all keywords by hyphen rather than by underscore.
  • Keep your sub-directories name as compact as possible.
  • Limit the file size to less than 101K because Google cuts almost everything above that.

The website design and layout gives the initial impression about your site. There are sites which are too elegant and regular net surfers just visit those sites and come out even without performing a single click.

Search engines are intelligent but after all, they are a software and not human a being, who can read the content of their interest. If you make your site too complex, then the search engine would not be able to parse the content of your site accurately, and finally, indexing would not be effective, which results in a no ranking.

The original page content should have a keyword density of about 10% and should count in at about 400 words. Some suggest keyword density should greater than 1% and some suggest it should be 20%. I go with 1-3% with some LSI and semantic keywords which get it done.

What is a keyword?

A keyword is a term that is used to match with the query a user enters into a search engine to find specific data. Most users enter search phrases that consist of two to five words. Such phrases may be declared search phrases, keyword phrases, query phrases, or just keywords. Good keyword phrases are precise and descriptive.

There are few factors that will help in optimizing the keywords on a web page.

Keyword Frequency

As the name suggests, it is the no of times a keyword appears in a website title or description. You do not need to go overboard with frequency, as this could lead to a negative effect. Some engines can punish your website for being a spam. Repeat your keyword in the document as many times as you can get away with, and maximum 3-7 times in your list of meta tags.

Keyword Weight

It refers to the number of keywords emerging on your webpage compared to the total number of words appearing on that same page. Some search engines analyze this while determining the rank of your website for a special keyword search.

One method that often works well is to create some smaller pages, usually just a paragraph long that indicates a particular keyword. By keeping the overall quantity of words to a minimum, you can improve the “weight” of the keyword that is being highlighted.

Keyword Proximity

It refers to the placement of keywords on a web page in connection to each other or, in some cases, in connection to other words with a similar meaning as the queried keyword.

For search engines, that grade a keyword match by keyword proximity, the combined phrase home loans will outrank a citation that suggests home mortgage loans considering that you are searching only for the phrase “home loans”. Get it?

Keyword Placement

Where your keywords are located on a page is very important. For example, in most engines, putting the keywords in the Title of the page, or in the Heading tags will give it more importance. On some engines, locating keywords in the link text, the part that is underlined on the screen in a browser, can add further relevance to those words.

Best Places to Put Keywords

Here is a list of positions where you should try to use your main keywords.

Keywords in the title tag(s).

Keywords in the meta name=”description”.

Keywords in the meta name=”keyword”.

Keywords in heading 1 or other headline tags.

Keywords in the link like “http://yourcompany.com”keywords.

Keywords in the URL or website address.

Finding Keywords

There are several ways to find keywords for your website. Some good keyword ideas are:

  • The potential words, users would use to find your product or service.
  • The difficulties that your prospective customers may try to solve with your product or service.
  • Keyword tags on rival’s websites.
  • Visible page copy on rival’s websites.
  • Linked search suggestions on top search engines.

With the help of an online tool such as Google Keyword Tool, you will be able to generate a set of keywords in no time!

One other thing to note is, you need to pay attention to the beginning for your keywords – especially to what the root word is and what Google considers to be a match for that word while optimizing pages over time. You can brainstorm to recognize correct keywords for your site.

Another thing to consider in SEO is meta tags.

There are two essential meta tags:

  • Meta description tags
  • Meta keyword tags

Some search engines may display the meta description as a portion of the search results, but the meta keyword tags should not appear in search results.

The general agreement among SEO experts is that meta tags are dead. Despite that belief, many of these same experts proceed to use meta tags on their own sites.

For Google, adding the description meta tag does not result in an increase in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs), but the description might be utilized for the description for your SERP listings in Google.

Yahoo! says, they apply the Keyword Meta Tag when it ranks a page. Hence it makes sense to add one for Yahoo! and any other minor search engines that still use.
